The Return Gaze

For The Return Gaze, I look beyond inherited narratives, turning to my father’s photographic and film archive to explore the impact of his struggles on our relationship. With very few photos of us captured together in the frame, I turn instead to the photos he took of me — considering my return gaze, my expressions, gestures, and posture, alongside his choices of location, occasion, and composition.

It is in the Super 8 films that an emotional dialogue between us emerges: a quiet collaboration between father and daugther, subject and photographer, where something intimate and almost magical unfolds from the interplay between the observer and the observed.
