Persona Non Grata 2007 3.29 Min
"I'm a very disappointed man: Human Nature has fallen far short of my expectations." Louise Taylor had a chance encounter with David Bryar (author) in Chiang Mai Thailand in 2006. Their meetings led to an exchange of creative work, David's offering being his self-published autobiography.
Louise's video Persona non Grata takes its name from David Bryar's book. It is inspired by her encounter with him. The photos were taken in Hillside Plaza & Condotel 4 an apartment complex accommodating mainly none nationals “farang” and a karaoke band that played to a near-empty restaurant every night.
Hillside Plaza and Condotel in Chang Mai, Thailand, is a complex of over 900 studio apartments, restaurants and shops. Massage and plastic surgery are available on the ground floor. It is inhabited by retired expats from England, Australia and Japan. They are transported from their studio apartments to the nearest air-conditioned Italian restaurants, avoiding the heat and chaos of Huai Kaew Road. We stayed here for a few months. I hoped by renting an apartment we would meet some local Thai people. We had friendly exchanges with the Thai Karaoke band that played on the ground floor to an empty restaurant each night, but mostly we met expats such as David Bryer, a self-published pensioner who gave me a copy of his autobiography Persona Non Grata, reviewed here in the Changmai News:
“Like watching a gruesome horror movie from behind the sofa or listening to your best friend sing karaoke off-key, there is something grotesquely attractive about this car-wreck of a book. From the dedication “To Marcel & Claudia – who don’t give a fuck about their father” to the postscript which begs for financial hand-outs, Bryar amazes the reader with a tale covering the last seven years of his life: from his first meeting with and subsequent marriage to Kazakhstani Dilbara Sultanova, to his somewhat mysterious current presence here in Chiang Mai.”

Untitled 1997 2.05 min
This film was made in Soho, London whilst I was studying in London. It was my only attempt at animation. Some of it I filmed on a 16 mm Bolex. The other footage was found. The plan was for the Chinese and English text from shop signs to animate and for a Romeo and Juliet scenario to unfold. I never quite got there, but this is the result.
